GUATEMALA - a boring city

THURS DEC 4 – DAY 56 – GUATEMALA CITY, GUATEMALA

I got up, took my time, had a coffee and breakfast – worked on my laptop for a few hours – had a facetime with Jado -  then took a motorcycle uber to old town Zona 1 in Guatemala City.

It was ok.  Lots of Christmas happening.  A roller blading arena and sledding hill with American Christmas tunes – and lots of markets.

I took a car uber back home, big mistake – the traffic is insane and took prob 3x as long to get home as it did to get here on a bike.

Heated up my leftover pizza, showered, and worked more on laptop.  Not a memorable day at all

FRI DEC 5 – DAY 57 – ANTIGUA, GUATEMALA

My ride picked me up at 8am.  I realized I had purchased the wrong tour – our first stop was Hobbitenango, which is a park all about the series the Hobbit.  Oh my.

It was pretty boring, though I met a group of guys, taking photos.  They took selfies on my phone without me knowing so we had a laugh.  Later, the one friend asked if the other guy could have a photo with me, he was embarrassed and shy because he thought I was pretty.  He was pretty cute himself haha.. we took photos, chatted a while.  That cutie made this old gal feel good for a few minutes for sure.  Thanks Keneth!

We carried on to Antigua.  It was a quaint town where every street is cobblestone, original to the 1500’s when it was built.  I liked the town, the tour was a fail.  Lunch was good, I ordered salmon pasta and a glass of red wine.

Traffic all the way home, brutal!  Got home exhausted and really unimpressed with this country.  The city is boring.  The business district  zone 10 does not look business like at all.  The old town zone 1 is ok but not close to the culture I have seen elsewhere this trip.  All the other zones in this city are run down and more poverty and unsafe for me to walk around.  My only regret is not seeing Lake Atitlan.

Home to shower, eat and chill for the evening.

RECAP of GUATEMALA

The Guatemala City metropolitan area has a population of 3.4M.  it feels crowded, poor, and chaotic.  I don’t think the people are happy.

Traffic is nuts everywhere you look.  People don’t drive in their lanes, they just drive anywhere and honk.  There are a lot of motorcycles here, there were zero in Panama interestingly.

From the moment I stepped out of the airplane and walked out the airport until the moment I leave, the energy here is way off for me.  I do not like it, I don’t fit in here.

Guatemala, I rate you 2/10.  I can honestly say there is really nothing in this country that grabbed my attention – outside of the cute Costa Rica boy – lol .. this place ain’t for me.

the moment i arrived at the airport was chaos… these people stanging outside waiting for people coming off flights, people piling into truck beds to drive into the city - all allowed

i actually really liked my pod bed - no noise and slept great!

more markets - anyone wanna buy a christmas doily toilet seat cover??

met Ethan from Canada studying spanish here and buying braids

hobbitenango park - where keneth asked for a photo w me but was shy and embarrased as his friend told me becuase he thought i was pretty… green and white shirt.. cutie from costa rica :)

pics from Antigua from 1500’s.
